The Prayer of St. Ephraim in the Ruthenian Tradition
The Prayer of St. Ephraim in the Ruthenian tradition as found in St. Peter Mogila’s 1639 Liturgikon (Sluzhebnik)
prescribed to be done on the Wednesday and Friday prior to the Great Fast then every day from Forgiveness Sunday Vespers through Holy Saturday
O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of laziness, despair, lust for power, and vain talking. [prostration]
But give to me, your servant, the spirit of purity, humility, patience, and love. [prostration]
Yes, Lord and King, grant me to see my own sins and not to judge my brother, for blessed are You forever and ever. Amen. [prostration]
*** The following triplet is recited 4 times:
O God, be merciful to me, a sinner. [bow]
O God, cleanse me of my sins and have mercy on me. [bow]
O Lord, forgive me, for my sins are many. [bow]
Then the prayer again:
O Lord and Master of my life! Take from me the spirit of laziness, despair, lust for power, and vain talking. But give to me, your servant, the spirit of purity, humility, patience, and love. Yes, Lord and King, grant me to see my own sins and not to judge my brother, for blessed are You forever and ever. Amen. [prostration]
*** A tip for keeping track of doing the triplet four times:
With your left hand, place your thumb on your pointer finger for the 1st triplet, middle finger for the 2nd, ring finger for the 3rd, then pinky for the 4th
